Best Album Covers of All Time - Nirvana: Nevermind

Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” released on September 24, 1991, features one of the most recognizable and controversial album covers in rock history. The image shows a naked baby (Spencer Elden) swimming underwater toward a dollar bill attached to a fishing hook. Photographed by Kirk Weddle and designed by Robert Fisher under direction from frontman Kurt Cobain, the concept reportedly emerged from Cobain’s fascination with underwater births. The striking visual metaphor of a newborn chasing money perfectly complemented the album’s themes exploring commercialism, innocence, and the contradictions of American society.

The cover’s creation was remarkably straightforward yet fraught with challenges. Weddle recruited several families for the underwater shoot at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, with four-month-old Spencer Elden ultimately selected for the final image. The dollar bill and hook were added in post-production to complete Cobain’s vision. The label initially expressed concerns about the baby’s visible genitalia, even suggesting airbrushing, but Cobain allegedly refused any censorship, agreeing only to cover the image with a sticker reading: “If you’re offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile.”

“Nevermind,” a groundbreaking grunge/alternative rock album, catalysed a seismic shift in popular music, knocking Michael Jackson from Billboard’s top spot and effectively ending the hair metal era. The record sold over 30 million copies worldwide, propelled by the explosive success of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and followed by hits like “Come As You Are” and “Lithium.” The album’s raw sound, introspective lyrics, and anti-establishment ethos revolutionised 1990s music culture, with its provocative cover becoming an enduring symbol of Generation X’s conflicted relationship with commercialism. The image remains controversial decades later, with Elden himself filing legal challenges against its continued use, adding another layer to the complex legacy of this landmark recording.
